ECDV Secretariat Meeting

Minutes of the Meeting of the Secretariat of Cursillo in the Diocese of Virginia

The meeting took place at Christ Church, Spotsylvania Courthouse, following fellowship, the Commissioning of Team 123, and grouping.
Present were: Geoff Davis, Mark Hopkins, Shirley Hopkins, Ed Schneider, Pete Demaree, JaNell Barker, John Symonds, Jo Freeman, Fr. Bill Burke, and Connie Smith.

Discussion of Alternatives to Full Weekends. Jo explained that there would be semi- permanent Core teams while other members would rotate. Certain regions would be targeted. Ed observed that the site for an individual parish weekend was critical since it is imperative to maintain a closed community and most parishes have many activities on Sunday. Size is also a factor. In his experience, Ed said that they had both a Fourth Day Team and a Kitchen Team. They also had a special spiritual advisor to serve the Team. We have forty-four (44) applications at this point, so we already have a waiting list.

Should the weekends be single-sex or co-ed? Bill Burke stated that in San Diego, they made the men go first because if the women went first, the men dropped out. He asked whether the Community had statistics, and when he found that the answer was no, he suggested that a question might be added to the application asking whether the candidate would rather participate in a single-sex or co-ed weekend.

Weekends for 2003. Three weekends were proposed for next year: men's and then women's in the Spring and co-ed in the Fall. Shirley Hopkins suggested the third week of May, the second week of June, and then Early October. This motion was passed.

The list of eligible rectors was discussed at some length, and then rectors were selected for these weekends. The Lay Director will make the appropriate calls.

Team Training Manual. Peter Demaree observed that the group revising the manual needs to come up with flexible not hard-and-fast rules. Those being called need to know that they are part of a new thing, that Cursillo is moving in new directions and that they get to be part of the newness.

Lay Director's Length of Term. The trend seems to be toward a two-year term of service for lay directors, and Jo Freeman said that if this body should make that decision, she would be willing to serve. Bill Burke suggested that statistics be gathered, including other Dioceses in Virginia and some of the bigger communities nationwide, and these then be presented to Bishop Jones along with the request to alter current practice. Geoff Davis agreed to gather such data.

Community Activities. Ed Schneider is working on a plan of Community Activities. According to his vision, there would be an ECLW in the Richmond area in January or February, a Day of Deeper Understanding in the Spring after the weekends, something over the summer, perhaps in the July framework, then a Day of Deeper Understanding after the Fall weekends in the Winchester area. This would move activities around the Diocese.

Next Meeting. The next meeting of the Secretariat will be Saturday, April 13 in Faulkner Hall of St. George's Church in Fredericksburg beginning at 9 a.m.

After a closing prayer, the meeting adjourned at 1 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Constance Fletcher Smith
Secretary
