July 17, 2004

The meeting was held in Faulkner Hall of St. George's Church in Fredericksburg.

Present were: Dave vanEsselstyn, John Symonds, Alice Lees, Connie Smith, Roger Robillard, and Ed Schneider.

The meeting began at 9:10 a.m. with a floating group reunion using the Leader’s Card.

Spiritual Companion Comments. Roger Robillard shared the mission statement of his parish: to know the Christ and to make Him known. This involves mentoring, being open to being helped, fed and challenged by others. The dominant image is from quilting – being bound and stitched by the blood of Christ. Our job is to be "out there," trying to get people to accept the gift.

Minutes. Roger’s church, Trinity Highland Springs has an Ultreya from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. every fourth Friday of the month, and all Fourth Day activities begin with floating Group Reunion. He wanted the minutes to reflect that fact because the Fourth Day is so important. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as amended.

Treasurer’s Report. Dave vanEsselstyn gave the report for Dave Wright. The community's CD was cashed and deposited into the checking account, which now has a balance of $6533.83. David Jones did support two clergy with funds. The Community Weekend at Camp Easter Seal was not a financial success but it was a spiritual one.

Update on Weekend #128. Churchill Gibson will serve as a Spiritual Director, and Jim Chipps has volunteered to serve also. Roger is still in search of a third priest, preferably female. Team calling is proceeding. For a Day of Deeper Understanding, a half day is recommended: instructed Ultreya and talks on sponsorship and group reunion. The schedule for the day would be 8:30 – 9 a.m. gather, then instructed Ultreya, then the two talks, ending in the early afternoon. The site will be St. Mark’s, Alexandria.

Weekends 2005. The Secretariat would like to plan two weekends for 2005, one at Camp Easter Seal and one at Front Royal. The discussion suggested one alumni/renewal weekend at Camp Eater Seal in the spring and one candidate weekend at Front Royal in October.

Newsletter. We will need about 1500 copies. Roger wants to make sure he has a chance to meet with Patrick and get the diocesan return address. The permit number also has to appear along with the return address. Alice Lees has been working on a draft, which she shared (to applause) with the Secretariat. We are hoping for a proofed copy at the meeting at John Symonds’ on August 21, with printing the following week and copies to Roger for mailing in plenty of time for the October weekend. A pastel color may be used.

Assistant Lay Director. John Symonds appreciates the call for another Community Weekend at Front Royal. He is interested in soliciting articles and prayer requests from others in the Cursillo Community. His message is that we need to "keep on keepin' on" and not give up. The next meeting, on Saturday, August 21, will be a cookout at his house. He will provide meat and drink; we need to bring salads and desserts. The Secretariat will gather around 9 or 9:30 in the morning; he will be sending out an agenda. The hope is to finish business by 12:30 or so and end the day by 3 or 4 p.m. He will send directions to his home. He asks that we all pray for the Cursillo Movement, for the Newsletter, and for individuals, such as Shirley Hopkins (with an infected foot) on our prayer list.

Lay Director. Dave vanEsselstyn asks for prayers for an upcoming meeting with Bishop Jones, with many thanks for his involvement and continued service and support. He is encouraged by the sparks he sees but somewhat discouraged by apathy. He thanks the Secretariat for its fellowship, which helps keep him going; it is a true blessing and source of strength.

Team commissioning needs to take place at one of the Team training meetings. This will be scheduled when possible.

Roger closed the meeting with prayer. The meeting adjourned at 11:35 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Constance Fletcher Smith
Secretary
