Minutes of the Meeting of the Secretariat of Cursillo in the Diocese of Virginia

The meeting was held at the home of the Assistant Lay Director, John Symonds. Present were: Elaine Kallio, Roger and Lydia Robillard, Dave vanEsselstyn, John Symonds, Dave Wright, Sue Davis, Connie Smith, and Alice Lees.

John Symonds opened the meeting with prayer. At 10:25, reunion grouping began, using the Leaders’ Card.

Some ideas were expressed that might influence Cursillo in the future.
  • Sue Davis suggested the possibility of providing an outline of how to view each talk from the standpoint of Piety, Study and Action.
  • Roger Robillard has been studying the Library about the earliest Cursillo and the importance of Group Reunion. Perhaps future weekends could include a group reunion as part of each day.
  • Elaine Kallio’s Action is the upcoming weekend, where she will be assistant rector, and so is Lydia Robillard’s; she will be giving the Ideals talk. The first Team meeting went very well.

Spiritual Companion. Roger Robillard wrote to Bishop Jones. Roger is a trained interim and has already taken a course on appreciative inquiry; now he would like to take the course on "soul friending," a three-day course in November. He announced that his parish will be using The Purpose Driven Life for their study. The first chapter is “It’s Not All About Me; It’s All About Him,” which he felt was a good message for us all to consider.

Minutes. The minutes of the last meeting reversed the weekends. The candidate weekend will be held at Camp Easter Seal and the community weekend at Front Royal. With that correction, the minutes were approved.

Treasurer’s Report. The goal is to have enough in the treasury to fund a weekend if necessary. With the cashing of the CD, we have reached that goal. The amount is the same as last month: $6533.83. The report was approved unanimously.

Weekend #128 Update. Sue Davis distributed a preliminary candidate list. September 3 is the cutoff date for applications. Kate Chipps, along with her husband Jim, will be a spiritual director. The Team has recommended November 6 as the date for the Day of Deeper Understanding; this has not yet been confirmed. Team Commissioning will be Saturday, September 18 at 9:30 a.m. followed by the next meeting of the Secretariat at Aquia Church.

Newsletter. Alice Lees circulated a proof copy, in ten point font, published in Quark Express. To print 1500 copies will cost around $350.00. We still need the information on the place and date of the Day of Deeper Understanding. The return address, with return service requested, and the postal permit must coordinate. Alice recommends dark blue ink on white paper; everyone concurred. Sue Davis suggested a future column titled “How I am using the Cursillo method to change my environment” and soliciting submissions from readers. Also, the Prayer and Praise services should be listed, with the appropriate information.

New Business. There was no new business.

Roger reminded everyone of this statement:

The Church is a non-profit organization, but it should never be a non-prophet one.

After a number of prayer requests, the meeting adjourned at 11:55 a.m. It was followed by a pot-luck lunch graciously hosted by John and Denise Symonds.

Respectfully submitted,

Constance Fletcher Smith
Secretary
